Vivian Olson Matthews

Vivian Olson Matthews, 89, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, August 13, 2022. She was born in Lightfoot, Virginia and was the second of two children to Edward Lawrence Olson and Clara Inga Levorsen Olson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 54 years, Drew Irving Matthews and her brother Edward Lawrence Olson, Jr.

Vivian graduated from Toano High School in 1950 and attended Madison College before getting her first job as a Secretary at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She then worked as a Secretary at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Virginia where met the love of her life and married Drew on June 12, 1954. As the wife of a young Marine Corps officer, Vivian and Drew traveled across the country and overseas. She cherished raising her family, became an accomplished seamstress, a talented photographer and later in life, took up golf regularly scoring better than her sons. In 1994, they retired to Beverly Hills, Florida where they enjoyed making new friends and traveling.

Vivian is survived by her three sons, Kevin (Karen), Mark (Karen), and Terry (Susan), seven grandchildren, Kari, Kasey, Kevin Jr, Megan, Jordan, Sylvia, Sara, and one great grandchild, Sophie.

The celebration of life service will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined where she will be reunited with her beloved husband. More details will follow when Arlington is able to schedule her burial.
