WOLFSON, M.D., Sorrell L., age 80 of Palm Beach Gardens died Sunday, September 2, 2007. Dr. Wolfson was a lifelong resident of Tampa before moving to Palm Beach Gardens upon retirement. He was a U.S. Navy Corpsman during WWII and a renowned pediatrician and hematologist and oncologist. He served as the head of Pediatrics at Tampa General Hospital prior to the opening of the USF Medical School and was devoted to studies in diagnostics and treatment of children's cancer as well as blood disorder's including sickle-cell anemia and hemophilia . Dr. Wolfson did extensive study in the area of children's poisoning and spearheaded the removal of products containing Parathion from homes. He taught as a Clinical Professor at the University of Florida and University of South Florida and authored or co-authored numerous medical articles, including one that received worldwide attention on the treatment of hyaline membrane disease. He was active with the "Head Start" program where he was appointed a consultant by the American Academy of Pediatrics . He later became a Radiation Oncologist. He was an active member of Congregation Schaarai Zedek and Lifetime Member of Sertoma . He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Jacqueline. Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Aaron Howard & Adrienne Wolfson of Plantation, Mark Joseph & Myra Wolfson of Tampa and Dr. David Jonathan Wolfson of Jacksonville, daughter and son in law, Sharon Lynne & Dr. Israel Wacks of Palm Beach Gardens and seven cherished grandchildren, Alexis Salamon (Mathias), Andrew Wolfson, Rachel Wolfson, Max Wolfson, Cameron Stempel, Adam Wacks and Monica Wacks. A memorial service was held Tuesday with Rabbi Richard Birnholz and Cantor Riselle Bain officiating. Private interment was held at Schaarai Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1001 S. MacDill Avenue, Tampa, FL. 33629 or the Camp Coleman Fund at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 W. Swann Avenue, Tampa, FL. 33609.
