BROD, Rabbi Theodore, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2007 surrounded by family members and close friends. He is survived by Freda Brod, his beloved wife of 70 years; two sisters, Tessie and husband Irv Gratch of Fort Worth, Texas and Shirley Lipschutz of Philadelphia; daughter, Dr. Eldra Solomon of Tampa; two sons, attorney Sherman Brod and wife Sandra, and Dr. Al Brod; five grandchildren, Mical Solomon and wife Karla Edelson Solomon, Dr. Amy Solomon and husband Graeme McMurray and Belicia Efros and husband Neal Frauwirth of Danville, California, Rocky Goodson and wife Shelley, Taylor Goodson and husband James Proctor; 13 great grandchildren, Lauryn, Haley, Eryn, Bryce and Justin Solomon, Alexandra and Joshua McMurray, Giliah, Meriah, and Caelin Frauwirth, Tasha and Titan Goodson; 13 nieces and nephews, including Trudi Segal of Tampa; and a large extended family including Dr. Kathleen Heide, Dr. Joan Chase, Sylvia Krone, Dr. Phil and Debrah Shenefelt, Polly and Jay Hofer, Irv Edelson, Barbara Steel, Rose and Sidney Schuster, Ed Solomon, Nicole Bowen and Rabbi Esther Bat Tovia. Rabbi Brod was a devoted husband and father who lived an exemplary life of caring and sharing his love and wisdom with his family, many friends, students, and members of his extended community. Rabbi Brod was a Talmudic scholar and the author of numerous articles and two books on ancient medicine and rabbinical thought. He was known as a "walking encyclopedia" who could quote scripture and Judaic Law with ease. His professional history in Tampa includes serving as Scholar in Residence at Rodeph Sholom Synagogue, teaching at Hillel School, and serving as Jewish chaplain for James A. Haley Veteran's Administration Medical Center. For many years, he taught students and performed various rabbinical functions, including hosting holiday services, from his home. Funeral services will take place 2:00 PM, today, Thursday, May 10, 2007 at Segal Funeral Home ~ Beth David Chapel, 3909 Henderson Blvd., Tampa. Interment will follow at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa. In lieu of flowers, those who wish are invited to make donations in his memory to Hillel School of Tampa, 2020 W. Fletcher Avenue, Tampa 33612 or Jewish Family Services, 13009 Community Campus Dr., Tampa, FL 33625.
