FRIEDMAN, Our dear Nellye Israelson Friedman passed away on Monday July 25 at the age of 95. She was born in Ocala Florida, the daughter of the late Max and Sarah Frank Israelson. She moved to Tampa at the age of 11 where she attended Gorrie Elementary School, Wilson Jr. High and graduated from Plant High School in 1938. In 1942 she enlisted in the U.S. Woman's Army Air Corp and rose to the rank of Captain. Nellye met Herbert Friedman in New York City in 1949. They moved to Tampa and were married for 55 years until Herbert died in 2004. Nellye was very active in many civic organizations and served on many boards including: the Merle Kelse Library at the University of Tampa, WEDU- TV Public Television,Tampa History Museum and The Ladies of the Berkeley Preparatory School . She received the Rotary International Paul Harris Award. She was a member of Congregation Schaarai Zedek for 84 years. She was a member of the Board of Directors, received the President's Cup for being the outstanding member of the Temple and was President of the Sisterhood. She was the Co- chair of Mosaic - The History of the Jews in Florida which is now permanently displayed at the Jewish Museum of Florida- FIU in Miami Beach, Florida. Nellye is survived by her children Mary & Ted Kramer of St. Petersburg, Florida, Bill & Toni Friedman of Evanston, Illinois, Frances & Jim Williams of Charlotte, North Carolina and Dr. Frank and Julie Friedman of Mobile, Alabama.Her grandchildren are Robert Kramer and Lizzie Epstein, Rebecca, Jennifer and Bruce Kramer, Marcus Berkowitz and Hannah Friedman and Christopher and Anna Russell Friedman. Richard and Andrew Friedman. Her great grandsons Knox and Cole Friedman. Her sister Betty Solomon. Her dear friends Betty Jo Daniel and Lisa Daniel. The family would like to thank Brighton Gardens of Tampa for the wonderful care and love they gave our Mother. We would also like to thank Mother's caregivers for all their kindness. A memorial service will be held Friday July 29, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 West Avenue in Tampa. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Schaarai Zedek or Brighton Gardens of Tampa at 16702 Dale Mabry Highway Tampa, Florida 33618.
