Michael Berger

Michael Daniel Berger, 45, of Tampa, Florida, passed away on October 10, 2026, at James A. Haley Veterans Hospital.

Born on December 9, 1980, in Miami, Florida to Arthur and Andi, Michael lived a life defined by adversity, humor, and unyielding perseverance. After graduating from Miami Killian Sr. High School, Mike attended Florida State University where he worked his way through school in the hospitality industry. He also found time to participate in state politics serving as an intern with the congressional Black Caucus for the State of Florida.

In 2006, Mike enlisted into the United States Marine Corps as an amphibious assault vehicle mechanic. He later attended OCS and was commissioned in 2008 where he then served a combat tour in Afghanistan. He was honorably discharged in 2012 after completing his service as a logistics officer with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing in Miramar, California. He retired with the rank of Captain.

Mike went on to enroll into a slew of other academic institutions that allowed him to become a foreign exchange student where he lived in Lyon, Nicaragua for a brief time and even as a student studying urban farming in San Diego, California. Eventually, he found his calling as a registered nurse, where he provided care to veterans at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital for 8 years. Mike spent his entire life pursuing love and purpose.

Michael found both love and purpose when he met his future wife, Melissa. They became wed on January 4, 2020, and shortly thereafter in 2021 they became parents to their beautiful and spirited daughter, Layla. While working as a registered nurse, Mike developed an indelible bond with his fellow nurses for whom he cared deeply for.

On Wednesday, October 14th, a private service for family will be held in the morning and a memorial service open to all wanting to attend will take place at 1:30 pm at Congregation Schaarai Zedek 3303 W Swann Ave. Tampa, Florida 33609.
