Lisa Hollander, 79, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2026.
Lisa was born to Dina and Michael Waisman in Western Ukraine. Lisa’s parents were survivors of the Holocaust, specifically the horrors of Auschwitz. She was raised in a loving Orthodox Jewish family, where faith, family, and tradition were at the center of life. Lisa grew up alongside her beloved sister, Lilly, with whom she shared an extraordinarily close bond. They were not only sisters, but lifelong best friends.
A gifted student with a love of language and literature, Lisa attended college and became a teacher of Russian language and literature. She was deeply respected and loved by both her colleagues and her students, and teaching became an important part of her life.
Lisa shared her life with her devoted husband, Joseph Hollander, who she married in 1974 and together they moved to the United States in 1976 and chose Ohio to be their new home. Lisa started working at a bank and then she worked at a Jewish nursing home, helping countless lives, for over twenty years. While living in Ohio, Lisa and Joseph built a family that became her greatest legacy. She was the loving mother of Judy Kass and her husband, Jarrett, and Michael Hollander and his wife, Naseem. She was a cherished grandmother to Levi and Sarah Kass and Elliana and Ezra Hollander. Her children and grandchildren will carry forward not only their memories of her, but the history, traditions, strength, and love that she passed from one generation to the next.
Lisa’s life was shaped by family, faith, education, and the bonds she formed with those around her. From her childhood in Ukraine to the family she later created, she leaves behind a legacy that will continue through her children and grandchildren.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. May her memory be a blessing.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Congregation Rodeph Sholom or Congregation Schaarai Zedek.
