SEGAL, Jane Carolyn Livingston, age 83 of Hawthorne died Thursday, July 4, 2013. Mrs. Segal was born in Greenfield, MA and resided in New York for many years where she was the production manager with Seventeen Magazine. She came to Florida in 1965 and raised her family in Lighthouse Point. She was a lecturer for Weight Watchers and later founded Learn & Lose, Inc., a weight control class dedicated to helping people lose weight. Jane became a Realtor in 1980 and moved to Hawthorne in 1985 where she opened Country Lakes Real Estate in Hawthorne and Lakeside Realty in Melrose. Jane loved Hawthorne and as she would say, wanted to "put it on the map". She served as president of the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce for 11 years and was actively involved with numerous civic organizations including, the Lions Club, American Legion, the Hawthorne Women's Club and served as president of the West Putnam Volunteer Fire Department. She spearheaded HARC (Hawthorne Area Revitalization Campaign) and was instrumental in establishing the Hawthorne Historical Museum and Cultural Center. As a result of her efforts with HARC, she was honored as a 2001 Eckerd's Top 100 Women for outstanding women volunteers.While serving as Vice President of the FROGHAT (Friends of Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail), she championed for the completion of the final four miles which linked the trail from Gainesville to Hawthorne. She was also a supporter/ subscriber of the Hippodrome Theater for 25 years, Alachua County Elder Council, L:ife member of the Friends of Paynes Prairie. She made several trips to Tallahassee to solicit support for the Putnam Land Conservancy's grant application to purchase the Little Orange Creek Nature Park property. She was an advocate for animals and conservation and personally furnished data for the areas Lake Watch. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Bob. Survivors include her daughter, Ruth Segal and partner, Grace Howell, son, Charles "Chuck" Segal, his partner, Patti and her children Alexander and Rayce Peters, adopted daughter, Sharon Horner, grandson Aaron Segal and Aaron's mom, Teresa Segal, granddaughter, Rachel Segal and grandson, Jacob Denmark and their mother, Stacie Segal and many cherished close friends. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hawthorne Area Historical Society PO Box 1988 Hawthorne FL 32640.
