Herman "Hymie" Sabel, the seventh of eight children born to Joseph and Sofia Wolfe Sabel, Herman Sabel, of Tampa, Florida, born, raised and resident of Charleston until 1979, passed away on June 26, 2008. Many knew him to be a charitable and honorable man, who loved his family, and was fiercely loyal to friends and family, both. He is survived by the love of his life, Theresa Leff Sabel, his four children; Sharon Sabel (Patrick McElmeel), of Pompano Beach, Florida, Harvey Sabel, Diane Sabel and David Sabel (Mandy), all of Tampa, Florida, his two grandsons, Mark and Brent McElmeel, of Pompano Beach, many nieces and nephews in Charleston, Columbia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Florida and New York, and his other best friend, Precious, the family's Maltese dog. Herman loved to laugh and make other laugh, and he was not intimidated by any person, circumstance or adversity. It was only his body that ultimately failed him. A proud veteran of the Navy, and a participant in the Normandy invasion, he loved to tell how he saved 322 livesa"by shooting the cook. He especially enjoyed telling this story to General Norman Schwartzkopf, both before and after the first Iraq war, when the general was shopping in the family business that he established in Tampa. His favorite stories were of growing up in Charleston with his brothers, sisters, cousins and many childhood and life long friends throughout South Carolina and Georgia. He leaves a legacy of love and a powerful example of honor, charity and integrity to inspire all who knew and loved him. Graveside Services are planned at BSBI Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina at 4:00 p.m. on Friday June 27, 2008.
