Herbert Herzog

Herzog, Herbert, 89, of Tampa, died on September 5, 2024. He was born on April 7, 1935 in the Bronx and attended DeWitt Clinton High School and NYU, where he was a member of TEP. At the age of 10, he was selected as a boy soprano with the NY Metropolitan Opera, and sang there for 3 years. His time at the opera overlapped with his bar mitzvah training, resulting in him showing up one day at synagogue in full makeup - a story he loved to share. Later, he served in the US Army 3rd Armored Cavalry from 1953 through 1956 as a Staff Sergeant. During his time in the military he was stationed in Europe at Checkpoint Charlie and commanded a tank. After finishing his service, he worked in IT for ITT, NCR, TECO as a systems analyst. Herb married the love of his life, Rachelle “Shelley” Herzog (Miller) in 1969 and they lived in Parsippany, New Jersey until 1979, when they moved to Tampa. They were married for 45 years before she died in 2015. Herb loved to travel around the world. He especially enjoyed the many cruises he took with Shelley. Herb loved his children and grandchildren. He took pride in their accomplishments and enjoyed celebrating the holidays together as a family. When Walt Disney World opened in 1971, he made a special trip to Orlando, which would begin his life-long love of everything Disney. Herb also had a passion for model trains, which began as a child. Herb collected hundreds of trains, which took up an entire closet in his house. Herb was preceded in death by his wife Rachelle. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Brad Kanter of Tampa, son and daughter-in-law, Hal Herzog and Dana Moore of Washington, D.C.; and five grandsons, Michael, Joshua, and Benjamin Kanter, and Henry and Charlie Herzog. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 9, at 11 AM, at Gan Shalom Cemetery. Shiva will be held at the home of Eileen and Brad Kanter Monday and Tuesday evenings. Donations can be made to the Howard Kanter Kiddush Fund at Congregation Kol Ami or the Shelley Herzog Education Fund at Hillel Academy.

The service on Monday, September 9, 11AM will be live-streamed here
