Ellen Faye Crystal, 78, of Tampa, FL passed away on Sunday, November 19th, 2023 peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on April 22nd, 1945 to Miriam and Ralph Weisbard in Far Rockaway, New York and attended Hofstra University where she met her beloved late husband, Neal Crystal.
Neal became a US Army captain in Heidelberg, Germany and while stationed there for two years, Ellen began her career as a teacher. Upon their return to the States, they decided to settle in Tampa, FL in early 1973.
While Neal became a successful business owner, Ellen devoted the early years to raising her two young children. Later, as her children grew older, she nurtured her many passions. Ellen was a proud co-owner of Young Editions bookstore, assisted in the running of educational programs at Children’s Safety Village, and briefly worked at the famed What’s New boutique.
Upon Neal’s passing in 2012, Ellen found a home in the Hillel Academy of Tampa where she spent the next twenty years serving its community in various positions.
Outside of her work, Ellen was a devoted mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt and friend.
She was an adventurous traveler and indulged her grandchildren, Harrison and Charlie Metrick with many trips to Disney, Maine and California.
Ellen is predeceased by her parents and husband of forty-six years, Neal Crystal. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Marc Metrick; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Sara Crystal; beloved grandsons, Harrison and Charlie Metrick; sister, Norma Maybruck and numerous extended family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hillel Academy of Tampa.
