NEWMAN, Elaine Weiner, age 95 of Tampa, died on Sunday, February 5, 2017.
She was born in Toledo, Ohio, and later moved to Cleveland. In 1954 she and her husband, Stanford, relocated to Tampa with the family business, the J.C. Newman Cigar Company. Elaine adored her family and was a devoted friend to many. After raising her sons, she took a position as the Director of Community Relations with Maas Brothers. She loved culture and fashion, and she enjoyed traveling to New York and Paris throughout her life. Elaine was known for throwing large and elegant parties to support many charitable organizations. She helped found the Downtown Library of Tampa, volunteered for over 20 years at Tampa General Hospital, and served as a board member of Friends of the Library, the Tampa Museum of Art, the H.B. Plant Museum, and the Tampa Philharmonic. She was President of the Palma Ceia Ladies Golf Association and the Ladies of Berkeley and was a founder of the Berkeley Blazers. She was a member of Congregation Schaarai Zedek, the LAMPLighters, and the Chiselers. Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Stanford J. Newman, and her sister, Irma Zilbert. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Lyris Newman and Bobby and Merideth Newman; grandchildren Drew (Ariel) Newman, Dawson Newman, and Paxton Newman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to thank Michelle Hand, Danielle Banks, and Khamella Rohit for their caring and thoughtful assistance to Mom during the last four and a half years, they have been a Godsend. A celebration of life to honor her memory will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 12,
2017 at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 West Swann Avenue, Tampa.
Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elaine W. Newman Scholarship Fund at Berkeley Preparatory School, 4811 Kelly Road, Tampa, FL 33615. Condolences may be expressed online at segalfuneralhome.com.
